The nose reshaping surgery or rhinoplasty is most often recommended to patients whose nose size or shape does not fit the rest of their face. When you have a crooked nose or a nasal hump, a nasal bone needs to be aligned but when your nose is too wide, protruding or has an asymmetric tip then the nasal cartilage needs correction (no need to correct the nasal bone). Patients quite often complain about breathing difficulties caused by a nasal obstruction. In this case, a deviated nasal septum must be repaired to improve patient’s overall comfort. However, in most cases a total rhinoplasty, including a combination of all above procedures, is performed.

The following results may be achieved with a nose reshaping surgery:

  • Shorter, smaller and straightened nose
  • Nasal hump removed
  • Nasal tip corrected
  • Nostril reduced
  • Deviated septum repaired

The procedure is usually performed under a general anaesthesia, especially in case of the total rhinoplasty when one day stay at the clinic is required. During the surgery, the nasal skin is separated from the bone and cartilage structure and the nose is formed to the desired shape. Finally, the skin is placed back on the restructured cartilage and bone framework. Depending on individual needs, incisions are made only inside the nose or small incisions are also added at the base of the columella.

Facial swelling and bruising are visible for a few days after the procedure. You may also feel discomfort caused by pain in the nose area or headache. Once the cast is removed (8 – 10 days after the surgery) bruising should disappear. Your nose may be still slightly swollen but swelling is hardly noticeable. The complete healing process takes up to 12 months and only then the final results are evaluated. The thicker the skin, the longer the healing period. A follow-up visit is scheduled six months after the nose shaping surgery to assess the healing process and in most cases, this this the final visit.

Frequently asked questions

For the first few days after the procedure, swelling and bruising may occur on the face. The patient may feel discomfort. After removing the plaster on day 8-10, bruising should disappear. The nose may still be swollen at this time.

The period of complete recovery lasts up to 12 months – only then can the final effect be assessed.

Nose can be reshaped when it has reached its mature shape, which is usually after the age of 18. If you are less than 18 and your procedure is performed after injury, accident or for medical reasons, your doctor will have to decide whether you are eligible.

The operation is carried out under general anaesthesia. Over the first two or three days after the surgery you will experience swelling and discomfort associated with the presence of setons in the nasal passages. There is usually no need for pain killers in the recovery period.

You can undergo the procedure provided that you are completely healthy. Before the operation you will be asked to make detailed blood tests, an ECG of the heart and a chest X-ray. If the results suggest you may be ill, you will not be allowed to undergo the procedure. This gives you certainty, that once you’ve decided to undergo the procedure and were qualified for it, you can feel safe.

Facilities that have a contract with the National Health Fund (the NFZ) offer reimbursed procedures for correcting deviated septum and post-injury nose deformations. Nose reshaping surgeries (“nose jobs”) are not eligible for reimbursement.

Nose reshaping surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia, especially when it involves total nose correction which requires a one-day stay in the clinic.  The surgery can be performed using the so-called closed method – a cut in the nasal passages, invisible on the outside, and an open method. In the open method, apart from the incisions in the nasal passages, we make an incision on the bridge of the nose (the columella).
