Corrective treatment of scars after plastic surgery

The side effect of any surgery, including plastic surgery, is the formation of a scar which remains until the end of life. Its look after healing, whether it will be smooth and invisible or uneven and rough, is dependent on collagen fibres, their amount and spatial arrangement. And that in turn depends to a large extent on the regenerative capacity of the skin of each of us.

However, by using specialized procedures you can influence these capacities and make scars heal faster and make their final appearance similar to healthy skin.

With the aim to ensure the highest quality in our clinic, we offer you a programme of specialized procedures (PSM – Plastic Scar Management), which aim to reduce the visibility of postoperative scars.

Scar removal program – description

Postoperative scar usually develops for several weeks. Ultimately, the process of scar formation takes from 1 to 2 years. After this period nothing changes.

The first few weeks after surgery is the best period to affect its appearance. Thanks to specialized procedures such as shock wave, ultrasound, CO2 fractional laser, massage, kinesiotaping and LLT, forming an appropriate therapeutic scheme, you can model the scar when it is forming and correct it for the best aesthetic effect.

The therapy is always tailored individually to the patient.  Each case is preceded by a free consultation. In most cases, the scar removal program begins on the day of removal of sutures i.e. 7 days after surgery and lasts for 12 weeks.

The frequency of procedures is one per week. After this period, we usually end the therapy so that the natural processes of collagen formation would continue to improve the appearance of the scar.

PSM procedures:

Lymphatic drainage – is designed to improve the circulation of blood and lymph, thus improving the functioning of the body.

LLT (Low Laser Therapy)  stimulates natural mechanisms of body healing at the level of a single cell.

Ultrasound therapy – has a positive effect on wound healing and on arrangement of collagen fibres.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) – loosens irregularly formed collagen fibres. The therapy uses relatively strong stimuli and produces good results even with partially formed scars.

Scar massage – manual stretching of forming adhesion complements other treatments.

CO2 fractional laser – a microscopic laser beam “punches” a scar with a hundred of micro-craters, leaving a grid of undamaged surface between them. Each area subjected to the laser beam is surrounded by a layer of reversibly overheated collagen, which initiates rapid remodelling of the scar.

Plastic Scar Management (PSM) – Standard plan of procedures.

Standard scar correction program includes 8 rehabilitation procedures and 4 CO2 fractional laser treatments.

Information about the procedures can be obtained from dr Aleksandra Rymsza and dr Jacek Szwedo.

Frequently asked questions

You can also work on the quality of the scar at home, the most important is scar massage with quite intense pressure. The key to success is regularity and accuracy.

The process of laser scar correction is very individual, the effects are visible after the first treatment, however, to achieve optimal results, several sessions may be needed, usually about 4.

A cesarean scar is a typical surgical scar. In order to reduce its visibility, a co2 laser, Nd YAG laser, micro-piercing or acoustic wave can be used.

Boil scars can be treated like any other surgical scar.

When removing scars with a laser, you may feel slight discomfort, but a special anesthetic cream minimizes pain.

Work on minimizing the visibility of the scar can be started when it is fully covered with epidermis, usually about 2 weeks after removing the stitches.
