Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

We’ll help you restore a youthful figure

As we age it takes more effort to maintain a flat and tight belly. Sometimes intense exercising is not enough to restore a toned abdomen after pregnancy or significant weight loss.

In those cases, you may have excess loose skin and lack of muscle tone that gives your abdomen a ‘saggy’ appearance. The good news is that tummy tuck surgery could help reduce your fatty tissue and tighten up the skin, thus improving the appearance of your belly and waist.

Abdominoplasty is carried out under a general anaesthesia. Usually the surgeon makes a W shaped incision between two iliac spines beneath the bikini line. An additional incision around the belly button is made as well. Abdominal skin and the adjacent fatty tissue is separated from the muscles and tightened. The procedure removes excess lower abdominal skin and fat and at the same time repositions the belly button. In addition, abdominoplasty allows for tightening or reinforcing of weak tummy wall muscles to highlight your waist. A mini-tummy tuck is similar, but excises only lower abdominal skin and fat where there is no excess or loose skin above the belly button.

You may experience pain and swelling of the abdominal area directly after the procedure. For several days you will have to be positioned in a slightly inclined position.

Our Comprehensive Perioperative Care programme is an important element of the tummy tuck procedure. Before surgery you will be taught optimal ways to move, rest and apply kinesiotherapy. We also recommend our scar elimination programme.

Frequently asked questions

In some cases, e.g. after gastric operations in pathological obesity, the National Health Fund reimburses abdominoplasty.

Yes, it is. The doctor will assess your condition and check whether you are fit for this particular surgery. Only patients with minimal risk associated with this procedure are eligible.

The procedure can cause haematoma (a pool of blood in the tissues) or seroma (an accumulation of lymph). Both require surgical intervention. Other complications include impaired blood supply in the tissues above the scar – smokers are more prone to this complication, so it is important to give up smoking in the perioperative period.

Abdominoplasty does not cause much pain. Painkillers work very well in this case, so you may feel discomfort rather than pain. It lasts for about ten days.
